An Industrial Attachment is a structured credit-bearing work experience in a professional work setting during which the student applies and acquires knowledge and skills. It involves the application of learned skills in an organization related to the student’s major.
Types of industrial Attachment Placement
ILOAIP– (ILO Industrial Attachment Placement), the ILO collaborates with some organizations and secures places for students to do their attachment.
SAIP– (Self Aided Industrial Attachment Placement)- students secure places themselves which prepares them ahead of time on how to search for jobs after school.
Most of you have started submitting or have submitted your industrial attachment letters already to organisation or companies you wish to do attachment with, when you are offered a placement, some organisation will notify (email) the university about your acceptance of which the ILO will thereafter call to inform you. Some organisations will also give you an acceptance letter or a verbal assurance to start work with them when is time. Any of this is ok but if I were you, I will submit my letter to about five different organisations and make sure I collect a contact number so I can call from time to time for assurance of my placement.
VIRA
VIRA – (Virtual Industrial Attachment Programme) – students are given practical training on campus. This offer provides students with relevant practical experience as seasoned industrial experts are engaged to take the students through the training.
I have received a lot of questions from students wanting to know if this year’s VIRA has been cancelled, some alleged it was a rumour going on.
It is uncertain for now, but if I were you, I will take advantage now and submit my industrial attachment letter to a few organisations and just wait to see if it is actually cancelled, I will still have the opportunity to do the industrial attachment. Please do not wait for last minutes to start running from one organisation to another seeking for placement, you have the opportunity now.
Insurance Cover
The university has an insurance cover for all students on attachment, companies and organizations who may demand insurance cover from students can be obtained from the industrial liaison office or faculty industrial reps., in an eventuality where the student on attachment is injured, the insurance cover will cater for him/her
Thank you.
