The search for the long-awaited Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the premier Technical University has come to an end as the Council of Accra Technical University on 30th November 2020 appointed Prof. Amevi Ackapovi as the substantive Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Prof. Acakpovi who previously held the position on the interim for six (6) months takes over from the then acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edmund Ameko who had been in office since January 2016.
He will now serve the University as the substantive Pro-Vice-Chancellor on a three (3) year term. His appointment comes at the backdrop of the University’s transition to a fully-fledged University and heralded by the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samuel Nii Odai who was unveiled to the University Community a year ago.
Prof. Amevi Ackapovi’s Journey to occupying the position of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor is characterised by sacrifices and passion to serve the University and the country at large. He is an associate professor in the Electrical /Electronic Engineering Department and the Ag. Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Accra Technical University. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering from the Lokossa Institute of Technology (Republic of Benin) in 2006 and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering Option Control of Industrial Process in the Abomey-Calavi University (Republic of Benin) in 2009. He joined the Electrical/Electronic Department of the then Accra Polytechnic in 2010 as a lecturer, and then became Head of the Department from 2012 for two terms. He rose through the ranks to become a Senior Lecturer in 2013. Subsequently, he has acquired a great deal of expertise and experience in the field of Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering and Energy systems through training and a wealth of work experience. He made a step further towards his educational exploits by joining the PhD programme in Engineering at the Open University of Malaysia-Accra Institute of Technology in 2011 and completed four years later.
Prof. Amevi Acakpovi is the author of several publications in International Journals including the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) conferences, and transactions as well as other journals with Scopus Indexing, SCI-Indexed, and EI-Indexed journals. Prof. Acakpovi is also a reviewer of many journals including IEEE transaction in Sustainable Energy, International Journal of Renewable Energy Researcher (IJRER), and many others. He has supervised numerous Master’s Degree theses in the areas of Renewable Energy Engineering, Microelectronics Telecommunication Engineering and Occupational Health and Safety. He has been a senior member of the IEEE since 2019 and also a stalwart member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Ghana, since 2014.
His invaluable contribution and input to academia and various research fields have won him a lot of laurels such as the Silver Award – Engineering, Science, Technology & Innovation in October 2014 at the International Research Initiative Conference (IRIC) in Accra, Ghana. He also received in 2012, an Award of Innovation in Engineering at the1st Applied Research Conference in Africa (ARCA), in August 2012 at Cape-Coast, Ghana. Also, Prof. Acakpovi received in 2018, the Best Paper Award at the 7th IEEE International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology and subsequently the Best paper award in project management track at the IEOM conference in South Africa in 2018. He was also the winner of COTVET grant for skill development project and the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Programme.
Such enviable recognition both national and International has given him more power to his elbow as he continues to search for and add more to existing knowledge in his field of study. His current research interests include Hybrid Energy Systems, Mini and Microgrid Optimization, Smart Grid Modelling and Optimization, Solar and Wind Energy Modelling and Optimization, Wireless communication.
