NTC Registrar after some graduate teachers who had sat and passed the mandatory teacher licensure exams but not posted to teach asked him for posting has said: “NTC work is not to employ teachers but to license them.”
Dr. Christian Addai Poku, the Registrar of the Teaching Council in an interview monitored by Educationweb.com.gh said is up to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to employ a teacher who had passed licensure.
“NTC is different from GES, NTC is a regulator, NTC job is to ensure all teachers are licensed before they can teach in classrooms. We do not employ graduate teachers, that is the work of GES,” Dr. Addai stated.
The Registrar furthered that his outfit only issues license to teachers from various teacher training institutions who had completed the mandatory National Service and passed the Ghana teacher licensure examination.
“So after we (NTC) have issued you the teaching license, you have to go and find your own job but if Ghana Education Service (GES) sees you fit and consider you for employment that is fine,” the NTC official stressed.
According to him, qualified graduate teachers who have not been employed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) after passing the teacher licensure can also seek employment at the various private schools in the country.
“If you will go and be an education consultant and also train teachers it is your own responsibility not that of the Teaching Council,” he added.
